| Freightliners is a small farm in an urban setting providing the opportunity for local individuals and groups to learn from and interact with the environment and each other through animal care, horticulture and sustainable practices. It's purpose is to provide an educational and recreational recourse for the community, promoting social welfare and quality of life through a collaborative and inclusive community project. | ||
Freightliners Farm was founded on wasteland behind Kings Cross station in London in 1973. Originally the animals were housed in railway goods vans, hence the name. The Farm moved to its present site in 1978 and new purpose built farm buildings were erected in 1988. | |
Freightliners Farm is a registered charity, no 1014216, and a non-profit
organisation. Freightliners is also the only city farm in the UK which has
a non-slaughtering policy. The funding for this community-led farm and garden
comes partly from Islington Council, but the greater part of our income is
secured through fundraising.
Generating sufficient income is a challenge and always a priority. Entrance to the farm is free although visitors are encouraged to leave donations. The Farm is situated in the London Borough of Islington, the tenth poorest borough of London, combining some of the most attractive streets, properties and squares with some very deprived areas. This mix is reflected in our 45 000 visitors, 200 school visits and numerous volunteers each year. |
| Our current area, which is used to house our animals, gardens and classroom, is half a hectare, though expansion is imminent. | ||
The Gardens provide the perfect environment for relaxing and taking it easy. Sit in the ornamental garden, with its array of colourful flowers and plants, or you take some ideas home with you from our kitchen garden with its wide selection of herbs, fruit trees and bushes. Join us on Wednesday afternoons for our weekly gardening club. The Farm also produces a wide range of fruit and vegetables for sale throughout the year from potatoes and onions to rhubarb. The Farm has a wide variety of animals ranging from rare breed pigs and goats to new born lambs and chicks, many of which can be adopted through the Farms "Adopt an Animal Scheme". |
| Meet Olivia and Matilda the Dexter cows, or meet any of our lovely sheep or goats. To find out more about the animals on the farm, go to the Animals page. | ||
Come down to the Farm and learn about the secret world of the Honey Bee. There are 5 beehives, in the recently rebuilt apiary, producing delicious honey that is for sale in the Farm shop as well as beeswax which is made into candles and wonderful beeswax furniture polish. We are at the point of beginning a new project--the building of a continental bee house. To find out more about this exciting project, contact Coryn. If you would like to find out more about Beekeeping, why not visit The British Beekeepers Association Website or more locally the North London Beekeepers or watch this space for the new Freightliners Farm Beekeeping Club. |
