Islington Young People Discover Animal Care - Part 5

A chance to learn about caring for the animals on the farm and work towards a nationally recognised accreditation. Over five weeks you will learn how to carry out the daily animal care tasks on the farm and if you like complete an assessment record to gain accreditation for your learning from the Open College Network. Tasks will include feeding, grooming, exercising and mucking out. It’s a hands on course so expect to get up close to the animals, be prepared for some physical and dirty work and to have fun with other young people who love animals.

If you can’t make every week but still want to come along that’s fine and you can still make a start on the course and come to catch up sessions over the coming year.

Participation in these sessions will also enable you to complete the farm Health and Safety Induction ready to join our term time Young Farmers / Volunteer Sessions each weekend.

Islington Young People Discover - Farm Development Project

Work as a team together with volunteers from the local community to improve the farm site for people, animals and wildlife.  You’ll learn skills in communication, working together and problem solving, meet a variety of different people and make a real difference to the farm site.  We’ll be creating a new wildlife pond and installing a new duck shed.

There will be an hour’s unsupervised lunch break from 1pm to 2pm.  Young people may bring a packed lunch to eat in the designated areas on the farm or go out to local cafés and shops.

Young People Discover Work with Animals

A session for Islington Young People aged 13 upwards. In the morning come along to the farm and join Kelly from the Dogs Trust to find out about the work of the Dogs Trust. Then in the afternoon find out about the animal work on the farm , meet some of the animals and learn about farm safety and how you can become a Freightliners Young Farmer.

This session is part of Islington Council’s Recreation and Adventure Programme.

Please come prepared for being outside whatever the weather eg sun cream, hat, rain coat and with clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

Share in the evening splendour of the farm in summer time and enjoy wonderful food, drink and entertainment. Heartbreak Productions present their production of Private Lives by Noel Coward, directed by Maddy Kerr.

Private Lives is a 1930 comedy of manners in three acts. It’s about a divorced couple who, while honeymooning with their new spouses, discover that they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship, they realise that they still have feelings for each other. Coward wrote one of his most popular songs, "Some Day I'll Find You", for the play.

Islington Young People Discover is part of LBI Recreation and Adventure Programme for young people aged 13+

 

Farming Families Activities are open to children of all ages and their carers on a drop-in basis. 

 

Tuesday 19th February

10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm         Islington Young People Discover Animal Care

Learn about caring for and handling the animals on the farm.

2pm -4pm                               Farming Families drop-in and meet the animals.

 

Wednesday 20th February

10.30am-1pm                         Islington Young People Discover Herbs and Spices- Learn about the herbs and spices we grow on the farm and help us start sowing seeds for the summer.

2pm-4pm                                Farming Families felt making drop-in session

 

Thursday 21st February

11am-1pm & 2-4.30pm          Islington Young People Discover Construction Skills – Learn how to mix concrete, build a wall, paint and prepare metal work whilst helping to renovate the farm.

Friday 22nd February

11am-1pm & 2-4.30pm          Islington Young People Discover Carpentry.  Learn how to use basic woodworking hand tools to build a garden bed on the farm.

Young people taking part in Discover Sessions must complete a registration and consent form. Children under 11 years must be accompanied by a responsible carer.

Halloween Funday Fundraisier

Dress up in your Halloween Costumes and join the trick or treat treasure hunt with our animals. A chance to make your own treat bag, meet and greet some of the animals around the farm and pick up some treats on the way. There’ll also be pumpkin carving, face painting and a spooky selfie set complete with its own black cat.

We’re raising funds for the farm so there is a small charge for activities £3.50 per child for the treasure hunt and £2.00 per pumpkin for carving. Donations and sponsorship for dressing up and taking part in the treasure hunt very welcome.

Islington Young People Discover City Farming

An introduction to Freightliner’s City Farm, the animals, gardens and other activities and opportunities for young people to get involved on a regular basis. The session will include a tour of the farm, chance to meet the animals and an introduction to health and safety. This session is essential for young people wishing to participate in regular farm activities including for completion of awards such as Duke of Edinburgh and/or for those wishing to take up work experience placements.
